The Academic Excellence and Research Committee of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board voted unanimously to deny the request of a creationist group to offer a masters degree in science.
This sets up the vote by the full Board today.
“Religious belief is not science,” Higher Education Commissioner Raymund Paredes said. “Science and religious belief are surely reconcilable, but they are not the same thing.”
Bingo.

I was really pleasantly surprised to hear this - I figured that any educational board in Texas would be stacked with hardcore fundamentalists who would certify a group like this one in a heartbeat. Especially if they were appointed by Governor Goodhair. It's a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
I agree. I was thrilled to hear this, and to hear Texas scientists on the KERA story this morning pleading with the board to deny the request.
I'm still worried about the textbook battle that awaits us this year though. The State Board of Ed won't be so friendly to logic and reason.
I just discovered your blog, and I like it a lot. In fact, I liked it so much that I've added it to the BlogNetNews Texas listing.
This won't cost you anything, and may actually get you a few new readers. If you wanted to link back to BNN it would be appreciated, but it is not a requirement.
Keep up the great blogging.

P.S. I have also blogrolled you on my own blog (jobsanger).
Thanks Ted. Appreciate it!
